With the popularity of online dating increasing rapidly, more and more people are beginning to show confidence in the way the match making process is being conducted.
Also, more and more online dating websites are proliferating making the ability choose online sites easier.
The conventional way of match-making where people socialize with others until they find the right partner is proving too time consuming for many especially professionals who find they are too busy to focus on this and their careers at the same time. They thereby turn to online dating where the odds are even and where one can control the outcome of the matchmaking. As more and more people throw in their stakes, mistakes are common as we shall see.
One of the most common mistakes people make when embarking on online dating is deception.
The Internet world offers anonymity and people’s fantasies can run rampant in a world where screen names replace people’s true identities. While it is still possible for someone to hide their true identity even in the offline world, it takes more effort and this dissuades many (from hiding). But on the Internet, it is easier for someone to masquerade as another and totally radiate an erroneous profile.
In online dating, most online identity deception takes place not in masking appearances, although that is also practiced with shocking regularity, but in character and personality distortion. For example, people hide their past and will not disclose details about themselves that may cause them to be shunned. Also in purely physical online dating, people may exaggerate or distort their achievements and appearances through a technique called airbrushing which we will discuss shortly.
With the easy availability of photo-editing software, people can now correct and edit out certain aspects of their appearance that they find problematic. This technique is called airbrushing and has been used for a few years now by models and others in the entertainment field to enhance their looks.
This can be deceptive if the online relationship goes offline and the person whose photo was airbrushed now appears in their true colors. These can be overweight women who airbrush their photos to look like super-models or big-bellied men who appear slim and athletic after being airbrushed. This is also part of online deception. It is recommended that one post a realistic photo that portrays their true appearance. Full bodies pictures are preferred to passport size for obvious reasons.
Another mistake people make in online dating can be seen as the direct opposite of the first point we just discussed. While it is recommended that people practice some degree of anonymity initially while searching for a partner, some people reveal too much too soon.
It is recommended that one practice anonimity to some degree until he or she is comfortable with their online partner. Because there are few restrictions as to who can post a profile on an online dating site, people of questionable intentions may also post a flattering profile and lure unsuspecting seekers. For instance many pedophiles and people with criminal backgrounds can masquerade as perfectly likeable people.
But despite of this, many people still make the right decisions online and end up being happily married and fulfilled through online dating.
In online dating another major mistake people make is failure to check out the credentials of the dating site. While it is okay to enlist the services of any online dating website that appears capable of suiting your dating needs, there is need for caution especially where there is a recurring fee. Also avoid websites that have a negative review with the Better Business Bureau.
