Dating As A Single Parent
Posted by Angel

If dating can be tough for singles, imagine how it must be for single parents.  Unfairly viewed by some as carrying extra baggage, the dating landscape can be harsh.  In a dating market filled with singles without kids, why would anyone choose a single mom or dad over somebody else?

Fortunately, times are changing and people are more receptive than ever to establishing romantic relationships with single parents.  Of course, that doesn’t make it any easier for the dating parent who continues to look after their children while working to keep a social life.

The Dating Pool

A large dating pool means a large number of people won’t be a good match for you.  There are going to be individuals who won’t be suitable partners.  Every person has preferences and some simply don’t want children as part of the deal.  There’s nothing wrong with it.  You probably have characteristics you don’t want in others too, whether it’s being too short, too shy, or too talkative.

If you are a single parent looking to find romance, realize that there is a world of options out there.  You need not settle for your less than ideal relationship nor do you need to stay alone for long.

Finding Someone Who Understands

A major obstacle for single parents in the dating scene is finding potential partners who will understand the requirements of their situation.  As a result, many single parents have expressed a desire to date only people in similar positions.  Singles who are parents themselves simply understand each other better.  They have no problem accepting the fact that the relationship will likely take second place to the children’s needs. Even more importantly, they understand the demands on personal time and resources single-parenthood imposes.

To Reveal Or Not To Reveal

Some single parents choose to hide the fact from their dates until a later time.  It can be a good way of letting someone get to know you without letting the domestic situation muddle the field.  You get a genuine date instead of having to deal with unfair preconceptions. Of course, your date may interpret it as deceptive but such are the risks one must take.

Most people, though, would rather be open from the start.  Investing in a potential relationship only to have it end because of a later revelation can be depleting.

Single Parents Online

Because few single parents can hit the social scene as much as other singles, many choose to try their hand at finding love online.  The internet is a convenient place to find potential dates.  With easy access and minimum time requirements, you can meet many singles both with and without kids.  Just remember to take the necessary safety precautions and you should be fine.
