Signing up for an online dating site is easy. Browsing through the profiles to find the ones you like can be a breeze. Now it’s time to take the next step and start writing that first email to begin a connection with those singles you’ve set your sights upon.
Most dating services will have an anonymous email feature where you can send and receive messages. This email will be linked to your profile, not your real email, so that none of your privacy is put at risk.
While you don’t want to put too much time writing a single introduction, you would like your first contact message to be good enough to warrant interest. How do you write a first email to ensure you generate a positive response?
1. Keep it short and simple.
Be polite but not overly serious. Playfulness is allowed so don’t be afraid to keep it light-hearted.
2. Start with a friendly greeting.
A simple “Hi” should be good enough. If you’re feeling playful and you’re emailing someone who looks like they have a sense of humor, you can append something funny. “Hey there Rockstar” or “Hi Powerpuff” should convey enough fun without going overboard.
3. Mention something you noticed about their profile.
Choose something that shows you actually took the time to read their profile, not just looked at their picture. Be honest and keep compliments to a sensible level. Doing too much can come across as trying-too-hard or, worse, very creepy.
4. Find a commonality and mention it.
Find something you have in common and state it briefly. Whether you both like horses, went to the same high school or have the same favorite authors, finding a common ground from where you can begin a conversation will go a long way.
5. End it playfully.
A simple “Cheers, John” should do the trick. You can also use other light, non-threatening closing phrases.
Why Keep It Light
Light emails can foster a sense of comfort to whoever you’re contacting. You’re total strangers so anything serious can be construed in a bad light. It’s like meeting a new friend in class or running into someone at the park - casual and friendly. It allows your interaction to begin in a low-key manner with no pressure whatsoever.
So write that first email now. Who knows, it could be the start of an online dating success story?
